The Ogun State Government, acting through the Building Production and Management Authority (OGBPMA), has taken decisive action against building violations in a recent enforcement exercise.
A total of 10 buildings were sealed in Ilaro and Abeokuta, with notices served to the owners of five additional structures in Agbara, all found to be in breach of building regulation laws.
During a press briefing held amidst a monitoring and enforcement operation in Agbara, the Acting General Manager of the Authority, Engr. Olakunle Olaniran, provided insights into the crackdown.
He disclosed that the sealed structures in Abeokuta encompassed a residential unit situated at Ibara, along with four others located in Adatan, Abiola-Way, and Ita-Eko.
These actions were undertaken due to various transgressions, including contravention of Planning Permit, unauthorized construction, absence of certification in the building process, absence of professional oversight, and the use of substandard building materials.
Engr. Olaniran elaborated, “One of the buildings sealed in Abeokuta had initially obtained a permit for a single-storey residential development, but without authorization, transitioned to a four-storey structure indicating an intention for commercial purposes.
Such practices undermine proper planning, as commercial use necessitates adherence to crucial requisites like adequate parking space. The State will not tolerate such deceitful practices.”
In addition, Engr. Olaniran detailed the five sealed structures in Ilaro, which included two filling stations, two commercial buildings, and one hotel.
Expressing concern over the proliferation of illegal and disorderly constructions despite continuous agency awareness campaigns and sensitization regarding proper building practices and obtaining necessary permits, he emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to ensuring adherence to the State’s building laws.
Highlighting the criteria for constructing buildings within the state, Engr. Olaniran underscored the importance of professional supervision, clearly displayed project site information boards, provision of personal protective equipment for on-site workers, and the necessity of a risk insurance policy for commercial developments, among other prerequisites.
Engr. Olaniran urged prospective builders to engage with the Authority prior to commencing any construction, ensuring that their projects conform to established guidelines and regulations.
