One of the leading governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has said her ambition to lead the state is driven by public goodwill rather than financial strength.
Obasanjo stated this on Saturday in Abeokuta while featuring on Media Parliament, an interactive programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council.
The former senator said she lacked the financial war chest often associated with governorship contests, stressing that her campaign was instead powered by voluntary support from the people.
“I haven’t spent billions, and I don’t have billions to spend. What I have is the goodwill of the people,” she said.
She explained that her campaign had continued to receive grassroots backing, with supporters contributing in various ways, including donating materials and services.
“I have people donating their time, their resources, anything they have. I have people donating T-shirts, caps and other items. That is part of the goodwill that has arisen from my service as a commissioner and a senator,” she added.
Obasanjo also dismissed claims that her participation in the race was a strategic move to negotiate for a deputy governorship or ministerial position.
“I am not interested in being a deputy governor. If I came into this race to be governor, I would not settle for anything less. I am not in this race for deputy governor or minister,” she said.
The former Ogun State commissioner for health maintained that she was not dependent on politics for survival, noting that she would return to her professional career if unsuccessful.
“I like the life I live. If I don’t get it, I will continue to participate in party politics, but I will go back to my job,” she said.
Highlighting her professional background, Obasanjo disclosed that she has been engaged in teaching, particularly online, over the past three years.
“As I am sitting here, I have a job, and that job is teaching. For the last three years, I have been teaching online, which became necessary during COVID. I have a good job,” she said.
On her recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, the APC chieftain described the visit as private but fruitful, noting that both parties had a constructive discussion.
“The visit to the President was private. He was very gracious, and we had a very good discussion,” she said.
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is among leading aspirants jostling for the APC ticket ahead of the Ogun State governorship election.
She reiterated that her ambition reflects a people-driven movement anchored on trust, service and broad-based support rather than heavy financial spending.
