Ogun State has taken the lead among implementing states under the Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up (NFWP-SU), recording the formation of 2,000 Women Affinity Groups (WAGs) within six weeks of full implementation.
The achievement was disclosed in a statement issued by the State Project Coordinator, Mrs Bolanle Fadairo, who said the milestone was validated by figures published on the National Project Management Information System (PMIS).
Fadairo described the feat as a strong indication of Ogun’s institutional readiness and firm commitment to women-focused development under the scale-up phase of the project.
She attributed the rapid attainment of the target to the support of the current administration and the political will demonstrated by key stakeholders involved in the initiative.
“The achievement reflects the visionary leadership and unwavering backing of the present administration, as well as the strong commitment of all stakeholders driving the project,” she said.
Fadairo also commended the collaboration among critical ministries, including Finance, Women Affairs and Social Development, and Budget and Planning, as well as the dedication of officers in the State Project Coordinating Unit.
Giving a breakdown of the WAGs formed across the four implementing local government areas, the coordinator said Ijebu-Ode recorded the highest number with 760 groups, representing 38 per cent of the total.
Ifo Local Government followed with 569 groups, accounting for 28.45 per cent, while Sagamu formed 378 groups, representing 18.9 per cent. Ado-Odo/Ota recorded 293 groups, making up 14.64 per cent of the total.
According to Fadairo, the spread of the groups across the local councils reflects effective grassroots mobilisation and community engagement in the project areas.
She reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to sustain the momentum, deepen the project’s impact and consolidate gains recorded so far under the NFWP-SU.
Fadairo added that Ogun was being positioned as a reference point for effective implementation of women-centred development programmes in the country.
