…No Retreat, No Resolution: Ogun Labour Vows To Sustain Strike

The face-off between the Ogun State Government and its workforce has taken a new turn as the State’s Organised Labour, on Friday, reaffirmed its decision to continue with the ongoing industrial action, rejecting the latest offer from Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration.
The decision followed a marathon seven-hour emergency meeting held by labour leaders on Friday, July 18, 2025, where they evaluated the outcome of their negotiation with the state government the previous day.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, which lasted from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) expressed strong dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of critical demands.
The labour unions declared that the Thursday meeting chaired by Governor Abiodun failed to yield acceptable resolutions on five major issues: the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) ;the new national minimum wage and its consequential adjustments ; the payment of eight years’ arrears of leave allowances; consequential pension adjustments for retirees; and the overdue promotion of civil servants for the years 2023 and 2024.
Organised Labour specifically described the government’s position on the Contributory Pension Scheme as “unacceptable,” stating it showed a lack of commitment to the welfare and future security of workers.
“The Council-in-session is displeased with the resolve of the State Government, especially on the Contributory Pension Scheme,” the statement read in part.
Consequently, the unions announced that their earlier declaration of a trade dispute—issued in their letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025—remains in force. They emphasized that the strike, which has grounded government activities across the state, would continue until tangible commitments are made.
“After thorough deliberation, the Council resolved that the status quo remains. The strike continues,” the communiqué declared.
The letter addressed to Governor Abiodun through the Head of Service was signed by top officials of the NLC, TUC, and JNC, reaffirming a united labour front in the ongoing agitation.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the industrial action, which began earlier in July, has crippled major government services, with schools, hospitals, and secretariats shut down as workers withdrew their services in compliance with the labour directive.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no fresh statement from the Ogun State Government regarding the next line of action.
