The race for the Abeokuta South Local Government Chairmanship seat has intensified as Hon. Omolaja Ayodele Majekodunmi, the immediate past Chairman of the local government, declared his intention to seek re-election.

His announcement comes as 20 other aspirants vie for the same position under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Majekodunmi, who served as the Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government until July 6, 2024, made his re-election bid public during a meeting with APC ward chairmen at Ago-Egun, Abeokuta, Isabo and Igbore where he met with the leadership and members of the party in the council.

He emphasized his commitment to a fair election, stressing that his candidacy is not a “do-or-die” affair.

“Oriloye,” he said, referencing a Yoruba saying that translates to “God is the chooser of winners.”

During the meeting, Majekodunmi urged party executives to remain united, asserting that while many have expressed interest in the chairmanship, his track record and experience set him apart.

He expressed confidence that the upcoming local government administration would herald a return to the “golden days” of local governance.

APC’s Abeokuta South Local Government Chairman, Hon. Adetunji Henry Fagbenro, also spoke at the gathering, commending Majekodunmi’s humility and leadership.

He was joined by Hon. Williams Allen Taylor, a former state assembly member, who praised Majekodunmi for his achievements despite the lack of autonomy for local governments during his tenure.

Majekodunmi highlighted his first term’s accomplishments, which include 36 projects, among them the construction of a standard health center in Igbore.

He also pointed out that he is the most experienced among the 21 aspirants and that, if given a second chance, he would surpass his previous achievements.
