Ogun LG Polls: ‘Election Not a Coronation Ceremony’ – ADP Chairmanship Candidate Tells Abiodun

With the Ogun State local government elections drawing close, the Chairmanship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Abeokuta South, Olalekan Alex Shoyinka, has called out Governor Dapo Abiodun over comments allegedly dismissing the importance of opposition parties.

Shoyinka criticized Abiodun’s recent remarks that claimed the performance of his administration has rendered opposition parties “unpopular,” describing the statement as “detached from the reality on the ground.”

In a statement issued to the public, Shoyinka expressed concern over what he described as an erosion of democratic values in Ogun State, citing alleged failures by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to address critical infrastructure and grassroots development.

According to him, the governor’s portrayal of opposition parties as ineffective is misleading, as many communities still struggle with poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare, and a general lack of sustainable development.

“The people of Ogun State are not oblivious to the shortcomings of the ruling APC government over the past five years.

While the governor boasts of impactful projects, countless communities remain underserved,” Shoyinka noted.

He warned that Abiodun’s remarks could be an attempt to discredit opposition parties ahead of the November 16 local government elections, potentially indicating plans to influence the outcome undemocratically.

“If opposition parties were truly ineffective, why does the ruling party feel the need to discredit them rather than allow the electorate to decide?” he questioned.

Shoyinka emphasized the importance of choice in a democracy, urging residents of Abeokuta South to make their voices heard on election day.

“The upcoming elections are not a coronation for the APC; they are an opportunity for the people to reject mediocrity and elect leaders who genuinely prioritize their welfare over political grandstanding,” he declared.

In a rallying call to eligible voters, Shoyinka encouraged Ogun State residents, especially those in Abeokuta South, to turn out in large numbers to assert their power at the polls.

“I urge residents to remind the ruling party that power truly belongs to the people,” he concluded.

The Ogun State local government elections, scheduled for November 16, 2024, are expected to test the popularity and performance claims of the ruling APC amid increasing scrutiny from opposition parties.
