The Nigerian Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, has announced the death of a former Director of Programmes at the Ogun State Television and past Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria in the state, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde.
Akintunde, a seasoned broadcaster and respected sports journalist, reportedly died on Wednesday night after a protracted illness.
In a statement signed by the Ogun NUJ Secretary, Bunmi Adigun, the council described his death as a painful loss to the journalism profession and the sporting community in Ogun State and beyond.
According to the statement, the late media practitioner’s passing marked the end of a remarkable career defined by dedication, professionalism and an unwavering passion for journalism and sports development.
“Alhaji Akeem Akintunde demonstrated exceptional commitment to the media profession, serving with distinction as Director of Programmes at OGTV. He lived and breathed journalism and sports until his last moments,” the statement read.
During his active years, Akintunde was known for his versatility, depth of knowledge and firm grasp of sports analysis, qualities that earned him admiration among colleagues and stakeholders in the broadcasting industry.
As SWAN chairman in Ogun State, he was said to have played a pivotal role in promoting sports reporting and mentoring younger journalists, contributing significantly to the growth of sports journalism in the state.
The NUJ called on colleagues, friends and well-wishers to pray for the repose of his soul and support his family during the period of mourning.
Burial arrangements, according to the union, will be announced by the family in due course.
Akintunde’s death adds to the list of notable media figures whose contributions shaped journalism and sports broadcasting in Ogun State.
