A Priest of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Diocese of Egba, Archbishop Adegbemi Adewale, has warned that Nigeria’s problems will persist if the government fails to reform its policies.
The cleric said changing the national anthem is not a solution to the country’s challenges.
Speaking at the church’s 42nd synod in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Friday, the Archbishop declared that Nigeria’s problems will persist unless government policies are reformed.
Adewale while addressing the gathering, charged the President, Bola Tinubu to take a drastic step in restabilizing the fast declining economy.
He also stressed that provision of social amenities and low affordable cost of living is more important to the citizens.
Speaking on the theme of the Synod, “Arise And Build” Archbishop Adewale insisted that Nigerian leaders must wake up to the reality of the current situation and begin to formulate policies, capable of rebuilding the nation.
He said “If the government does not change its policies, Nigeria will not move forward, even if the national anthem is changed twenty times.”
Archbishop Adewale continued “the country faces insecurity, lack of social amenities, and a high cost of living. The problem of Nigeria is not the national anthem, but the government’s policies.”
The Methodist Priest also lamented what he described as the loss of the essence of nationhood, saying that Nigeria remains weak and divided as a result.
Adewale, who regretted that current popular narratives in the nation- mentioning the japa syndrome, drug abuse, dollarisation of economy, amongst others, stated that President Tinubu must prove his administration to Nigerians by ensuring that the narratives are changed.
The cleric who did not oppose the return of the old national anthem, said Nigerians are yet to see the reality of governance in our various communities since the inception of the current administration.
He expressed hope to have a better political dispensation.
Adewale saud “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn in a year and two days ago. Though there are rays of hope in some of the steps of his government in foreign exchanges, petroleum subsidy removals, reduction on government travels and personnel, etc.
“ We are yet to see the reality of a governance in our various communities but we look forward and hope to have a better political dispensation this time around.
“Drug Abuse is at its worst situation in our country now, we pray to God that it should not be worse than this.
“The War Against Drug Abuse, championed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) , is a war everyone of us must fight together-the Federal, States, Local Governments as well as-all of us sitting here must be prepared to fight the war, “ he added.
