The Ogun State Muslim Council (OMC) has constituted an 11-member Constitutional Review Committee, resolved to intensify political engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections, and called on the state government to urgently formalise approval for the use of hijab in public schools.
These were part of the resolutions reached at the Council’s general meeting held on Sunday, August 10, 2025 (Safar 16, 1447 A.H.), at the Ijebu Ode Central Mosque Hall.
The meeting was presided over by Prof. Habeeb Oduye, Vice President General of OMC and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, with members drawn from the four zones of the state — Egba, Ijebu, Yewa, and Remo.
Prominent attendees included the Moyegeso of Itele-Ijebu, Oba (Engr.) Mufutau Ade Kasali; former Commissioner for Forestry, Alhaji Ali Ajibode; CEO of ARON Contractors, Otunba (Engr.) Fatahi Arowolo; and former Commissioner for Information, Dr. Lateef Dele Ogunsiji, among others.
In a communiqué signed by its Secretary-General, Asiwaju Kamal’Deen Akintunde, the Council expressed condolences over the death of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as a key figure in the establishment of OMC and growth of Islam in the state.
The body, however, cautioned against claims that the revered title of Awujale had ceased to exist, stressing that only the late monarch had passed on, while the position “remains forever.”
On political participation, the Council, in collaboration with the League of Imams and Alfas, resolved to engage political parties, aspirants, electoral bodies, and civil society organisations in the build-up to 2027. It also backed a bill before the National Assembly aimed at strengthening women’s participation in politics.
The OMC criticised the Ogun State Government for delaying the release of a circular approving hijab use in public schools and urged that the matter be prioritised.
It further decried what it termed the “unbalanced and unfair” distribution of religious programmes in publicly funded broadcast stations in the state, calling for urgent redress.
The meeting also encouraged Muslims to take part in the upcoming continuous voter registration exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging electoral officials to uphold fairness and avoid undue influence.
In the area of education, the Council appealed to Imams and Qur’anic school heads to incorporate vocational training and formal subjects into their curriculum, while supporting efforts to tackle the challenge of out-of-school children in the state.
The gathering also ratified the commencement of the process for appointing a new President General for the Council.
The OMC reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights of Muslims in Ogun State within the ambit of the law, pledging continued collaboration with stakeholders to advance the welfare of the Muslim community.
