A group of alleged commercial sex workers in Ogun State found themselves facing legal consequences as they were charged before a Magistrate court in Isabo, Abeokuta, the state capital.
The arrests, made on the 15th of October 2023, culminated from accusations that these individuals had been causing public disturbances and operating as prostitutes in public places.
The Ogun State Police Command revealed that the alleged sex workers had been warned on multiple occasions to cease their activities, but these warnings went unheeded.
The police also claimed that they had previously arrested and released the accused, only for them to continue their actions.
Consequently, the accused individuals, identified as Adebowale Abosede, Balogun Olamide, Ogunleye Folashade, Opeyemi Akanni, Ishola Funmilayo, Balogun Ayomide, Tomisin Olakokun, Awonusi Bukola, Okiki Ajoke, Michael Jumoke, Olamide Adebayo, and Gbokiki Olamide, faced a two-count charge of contravening the constitution and behaving in a disorderly and indecent manner in public places.
These offenses are punishable under sections 225 A and 249 1A of the criminal code law of Ogun State of Nigeria 2006.
In their defense, the accused, through their legal representatives, applied for bail, asserting that the offenses in question were bailable.
They argued that the arrests had not solely occurred within hotels but also within the defendants’ residences, some of whom had already finished their work.
Inspector Olaide Rawlings, the prosecutor, opposed the bail application, asserting that the police possessed substantial evidence to support their case.
She also emphasized that none of the accused were apprehended in their homes but rather on public roads.
Magistrate A.K Araba granted bail to the alleged sex workers, setting the bail amount at N200,000 each, and requiring two sureties with tax clearance.
Additionally, he ordered their remand at the Ibara Correctional facility in Abeokuta, pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions.
This legal proceeding marks a significant development in addressing public disturbances associated with commercial sex work in Ogun State.
