The Ogun State Police Command has unveiled a digital policing platform, Gateway Shield, to enable residents to report crimes and lodge complaints anonymously from any location, as part of efforts to deepen public trust and improve response time.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, disclosed this on Tuesday while hosting the newly inaugurated executives of the Ogun chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria at the State Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.
Ogunlowo said the platform was designed to remove barriers to access, protect whistle-blowers and enhance intelligence gathering, stressing that technology-driven policing remained critical to tackling emerging security threats.
“The Police are not averse to constructive scrutiny. Responsible reportage strengthens the institution and encourages officers to deliver effectively on their constitutional responsibilities,” he said, urging journalists to verify security-related information before publication to avoid panic and misinformation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, explained that Gateway Shield — conceptualised by the commissioner — can be accessed via the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, or through www.thegatewayshield.com�.
He added that residents could also reach the Command through a toll-free line, 0800 000 9111, for prompt intervention.
According to him, the initiative is part of the Command’s broader strategy to modernise operations, bridge the communication gap with citizens and promote discreet reporting of crimes and suspicious activities.
Earlier, the Ogun FIBAN chairman, Hon. Shoyinka, commended Ogunlowo for what he described as consistent innovation and engagement with the media, revealing plans to revive the quarterly
“Ogun CP Time Out with Broadcasters,” last held in June 2025, to strengthen dialogue between the Police, media and the public.
He also praised the Command’s efforts at curbing security threats across the state and pledged continued professional support from broadcasters.
Senior officers present at the meeting included DCP Sarah Ehindero (Administration), DCP Bolanle Murtala (Operations), DCP Gbenga Adeoye (CID), AC A. Akinmoladun and the PPRO, Oluseyi Babaseyi.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with the media to enhance security awareness and public safety.
The State Commandant gave the assurance during a familiarisation and courtesy visit by Ogun FIBAN leaders to the Command Headquarters in Abeokuta, describing the media as a strategic stakeholder in national security and development.
She outlined the Corps’ statutory responsibilities, including the protection of lives and property, safeguarding critical infrastructure, supervision of private guard companies, promotion of the Safe School Initiative, support to civil authorities during emergencies and deployment of the Agro Rangers Corps to protect farmers and herders.
The Commandant warned against unverified and sensational reporting, noting that misinformation could compromise operations and trigger public panic, while urging journalists to uphold accuracy, balance and professionalism.
Responding, Shoyinka said Ogun FIBAN comprised credible broadcasters across radio, television and digital platforms, committed to responsible journalism and public enlightenment.
He called for timely access to verified information from security agencies to promote balanced and factual reportage.
The NSCDC management team present included Deputy Commandants Popoola Rafiu Adebayo, Ajibare Emmanuel Jose, Ajala Kolawole, Adebiyi Ishola and Adesanya Kayode Motunrayo, among others.
Members of the Ogun FIBAN delegation included Moses Okunlola, Oluwatoyin Asakpa, Olusoji Akindiya, Remilekun Elegbede, Betty Adejare, Kola Popoola, Kikelomo Ogunsina, Wasiu Alani, Tolulope Obadare, Seun Adesanya and Babatunde Somoye.
The engagements underscored renewed commitments by security agencies and media stakeholders in Ogun State to strengthen partnerships anchored on transparency, professionalism and shared responsibility in advancing peace and public safety.
