The Ogun State Police Command has vowed to clamp down on vote buying, thuggery and other electoral malpractices as residents of the Remo Federal Constituency head to the polls on Saturday for a bye-election.
The constituency, comprising Sagamu, Ikenne and Remo North Local Government Areas, will experience a total restriction of movement from midnight until 4:00 p.m., according to police authorities.
Police spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, in a statement on Friday, said the command had deployed a “robust security architecture” in collaboration with other agencies, including reinforcement from Zone 2 Command, Lagos, to ensure a peaceful and transparent exercise.
She warned voters to shun acts capable of breaching the peace, stressing that the full weight of the law would be brought on anyone caught engaging in vote buying, campaigning near polling units, or displaying political stickers and flyers in voting areas.
“For a credible and transparent election, voters must align with electoral laws. Those with malicious intent should stay away from polling units because any attempt to disrupt the process will be met with decisive action,” Odutola said.
The state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, reportedly charged officers to remain professional, civil, and neutral throughout the exercise, emphasising that the command’s priority is the safety of voters and the credibility of the process.
The police also released election-day emergency contacts: 0915 957 8888, 0803 860 9898, and 0813 984 4740 for immediate assistance.
The bye-election is expected to be a litmus test for security readiness in the state ahead of future polls.
