In a momentous celebration of 161 years of dedicated service, the Red Cross in Ogun state honoured World Red Cross Day with a dual-purpose event.

Not only did they commemorate their enduring commitment to humanity, but they also welcomed the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Abolaji Fagbayi, as the  new patron.

The event, aptly themed “Keeping Humanity Alive,” unfolded at Valley View Hall, Government House, Isale Igbein Abeokuta, underscoring the organization’s unwavering dedication to its core principles.

Dr. Ibrahim Jide Bello, Chairman of the Ogun State Red Cross, emphasized the organization’s pivotal role in health advocacy by providing essential services such as free blood and sugar level tests.

Speaking passionately about the Red Cross’s principles of impartiality, neutrality, and humanity, he highlighted its position as a beacon of hope and assistance in times of need.

Furthermore, the Red Cross’s impact extends beyond healthcare, with initiatives aimed at alleviating economic burdens evident through cash transfers to families.

However, Dr. Bello also appealed to the government for a more conducive operational environment, stressing the importance of a fitting office space and operational vehicles.

The commitment to service echoed in the speech delivered by the organization’s chairman, who reiterated the significance of health initiatives and community engagement.

This sentiment was mirrored by Dr. Jemimat Omotade Sodimu, Acting Provost of Ogun State College of Nursing, who shed light on the Nigerian Red Cross’s expansion efforts to reach more people in states facing acute hunger crises.

Despite commendable efforts, challenges persist, as highlighted by Dr. Sodimu’s call for continued support to avert humanitarian disasters.

Recent distributions of emergency supplies in conflict-affected areas underscored the urgent need for assistance, emphasizing the Red Cross’s vital role in providing essential aid to vulnerable populations.

The Nigerian Red Cross Movement, guided by the fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, and voluntary service, stands as a testament to the power of compassion and solidarity.
