The Ogun State Government has announced plans to develop smart cities through urban regeneration schemes across the state’s urban centres.
This declaration was made by Governor Dapo Abiodun during the 2024 World Environment Day celebration held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
The event, themed “Achieving the Smart City Agenda Through Climate Change Resilience and Urban Afforestation,” highlighted the crucial role of climate change mitigation in creating safer, smarter urban environments.
Abiodun, represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, emphasized the need for collective action against climate change.
He outlined his administration’s initiatives to enhance green spaces, promote sustainable transportation, and reduce carbon emissions.
These initiatives include restructuring over 100 hectares of land in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Ota, and other locations into environmentally friendly spaces through public-private partnerships.
The governor stressed the importance of collaboration with urban planners, architects, and relevant stakeholders to achieve these goals.
He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for establishing the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, aimed at achieving carbon neutrality in Nigeria by 2060.
Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Oludotun Taiwo, and Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPL Tunji Odunlami, lauded the governor’s efforts in promoting a sustainable environment.
They emphasized that achieving a smart city agenda through climate resilience and urban afforestation requires the collaboration of all relevant stakeholders, as the government alone cannot shoulder the task.
Dr. Zachariah Buba Yaduma, Director-General of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, provided insights on the requirements for achieving a smart city agenda.
He highlighted the importance of urban forestry, park management, and the creation of open green spaces.
He also stressed the need for emission reduction, efficient energy use, good urban planning, and adequate waste management.
Earlier, Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ola Oresanya, noted that this year’s global theme was adapted to reflect the state’s unique ecosystem.
He viewed the event as an opportunity to strengthen strategic planning and enhance coherence among socio-economic and environmental policies.
Oresanya reiterated the state’s commitment to creating a new economy through green bonds and other green financing mechanisms aimed at decarbonizing extractive industries.
Mrs. Dominga Odebunmi, a global safety expert, praised the state government’s efforts in promoting safety and environmental consciousness.
She urged residents to voluntarily embrace a safety culture to reduce accidents and fire incidents, and to remain alert to environmental issues, thus fostering a safer, more sustainable community.
