The lingering industrial dispute between the Ogun State Government and organised labour remains unresolved, as a high-level meeting held on Thursday, between Governor Dapo Abiodun and union leaders ended without any agreement.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the closed-door meeting, which began around 4 p.m. at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, had in attendance top officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).
Despite the dialogue, labour leaders stood their ground, rejecting reported appeals from state officials.
According to sources who pleaded anonymity,the labour leaders insisted that the ongoing strike will continue unless Governor Abiodun personally addresses their demands and gives a firm public commitment to the payment of outstanding workers’ entitlements.
At the heart of the dispute is the state’s alleged failure to remit over ₦82 billion in pension deductions and other benefits. Labour leaders had on Tuesday declared an indefinite strike to press home their demands, raising the figure of the unpaid entitlements to ₦82 billion.
A source at the meeting, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told PLATFORM TIMES that the unions refused to accept any verbal or indirect assurances from government representatives, reiterating that only a direct intervention by the governor himself would suffice.
“There was no resolution. The unions made it clear they would not return to work unless the governor publicly commits to paying the outstanding pension deductions,” the source disclosed.
As of press time, no official statement had been released by either the government or the unions regarding the outcome of the meeting.
Meanwhile, public institutions across the state remain shut, with workers fully complying with the strike directive.
The unions are expected to issue further directives in the coming days, pending any new development or official pronouncement from the governor.
