The Ogun State Government has announced its collaboration with development partners in the health sector to include the Human Papillomavirus HPV vaccine in the State’s Routine Immunization schedule.

The state government added that the move aims to reduce the impact of cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers, while safeguarding young girls for a healthier future.

The Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, unveiled this initiative on Friday, during the State Technical Working Group meeting in Abeokuta.

He emphasized that cervical cancer can be prevented through regular screenings, early detection, and HPV vaccination.

He therefore said that the vaccine will be administered to girls between the ages of 9 and 13, providing them with a crucial layer of protection.

Supporting the government’s efforts, the State Consultant on HPV from the World Health Organisation WHO, Dr. Oluwaseun Inetagbo,, and Dr. Giwa Omotayo, from the Clinton Health Access Initiative CHAI expressed their appreciation.

They therefore urged stakeholders present at the meeting to actively promote the benefits of the new vaccine and raise awareness among the community.

The meeting saw the participation of various stakeholders, including representatives from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), League of Imams, and others.
