Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Olugbenga Dairo, has reassured the public of the safety of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a viable alternative fuel, addressing concerns over potential explosion risks.
Speaking to journalists in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Thursday, Dairo emphasized that CNG is safer than Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
“CNG is naturally less combustible than gasoline, is odourless, clear, non-corrosive, and overall, a safer fuel option,” he said, adding that public anxieties over its safety were unfounded.
Highlighting the push for CNG, Dairo noted that the Federal Government’s recent policy making CNG a primary option for affordable and clean energy was intended to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.
The adoption of CNG as an alternative to conventional fuels like petrol and diesel is part of broader energy reforms aimed at reducing fuel costs and environmental pollution.
To ensure safety, Dairo underscored the importance of using only high-quality materials and qualified technicians for CNG conversions.
He stated that the Ogun State government is committed to overseeing the process, affirming that all materials for vehicle conversions would be certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). Moreover, technicians handling CNG fittings must possess certifications from accredited institutions or organizations, he added.
