Members of the Nigerian League of Women Voters on Tuesday intensified calls for increased female representation in Nigeria’s political space, demanding the creation of 74 additional seats for women across elective offices.
The women took their advocacy to the constituency office of Isiaq Akinlade in Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency of Ogun State, where they formally presented a letter outlining their demands.
Unlike conventional protests, the group adopted a non-confrontational approach, engaging in dialogue with the lawmaker and emphasising policy-driven advocacy as a strategic pathway to achieving gender inclusion.
Speaking during the visit, representatives of the group said the push for more seats was both urgent and necessary to address the persistent under-representation of women in governance.
They stressed that the proposed 74 additional seats would serve as a corrective mechanism to bridge the gender gap in Nigeria’s political system and promote balanced representation.
The advocacy, according to the group, forms part of a broader campaign to dismantle systemic barriers limiting women’s participation in politics, while encouraging greater involvement beyond voting to active leadership and decision-making roles.
The women also noted that their approach reflects a shift from protest-driven agitation to institutional engagement aimed at influencing legislative and policy outcomes.
Tuesday’s visit, though calm in execution, underscored a growing and coordinated demand for affirmative action, as the group insisted that women’s inclusion in governance must move from rhetoric to reality.
