The Coalition of Ado-Odo/Igbesa Indigenous Youths has called on Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun to address what they describe as a longstanding imbalance in the representation within the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government.
The youth group alleges that the Ota axis has disproportionately dominated the leadership of the local government at the expense of the Ado-Odo/Igbesa constituency.
In a statement signed by the group’s Coordinator, Comrade Temitope Ayobami Taiwo, the youths highlighted the lack of equitable rotation of the chairmanship position between the two areas that comprise the local government.
According to Taiwo, since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, the Ado-Odo/Igbesa constituency has had only two representatives in the local government council—Hon. Musefiu Olatunji Lamidi and Hon. Abayomi Tella—compared to several from the Ota axis.
“The dominance of the Ota axis is evident in the extended tenures of figures such as the late Dr. Salami, Hon. Rotimi Rahmon Arugbo, and Hon. Wasiu Lawal, among others,” the statement reads.
“This disparity was further entrenched by the recent election of Hon. Sheriff Musa Adewale (Sam 20) as chairman.”
The group also pointed to an uneven distribution of developmental projects, noting that under the current leadership, 12 projects were commissioned, with only two located in the Ado-Odo/Igbesa area.
“One project was allocated to Alapoti ward and the other to Lusada, highlighting the need for a more balanced approach to resource allocation,” Taiwo added.
Community leaders and citizens are urging Governor Abiodun and other party leaders to rectify these disparities by zoning the chairmanship ticket to Ado-Odo/Igbesa in the upcoming local government elections.
“This move would not only address past inequities but also pave the way for a more inclusive and representative local government,” the statement concluded.
