Delta state government has promised the Nigerian Correctional Service, Delta State Command of Robust Support, and improving the existing partnership, especially the positive impact on the security of the state.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Isaiah Bozimo, made the promise on behalf of the state government, said, Okowa lead administration is willy and ready to support and improve on the already existing partnership with the Nigerian correctional services.
Barr. Bozimo stated this when the new controller of Nigeria Correctional Service ( NCS) Delta State Command, Babafemi Jaiyeoba, and his team paid him a familiarization visit at Asaba.
Bozimo commends the new controller of NCS for affirming the initiatives and robust relationship the state government has undertaken through the Ministry of Justice, particularly as it concerns the rendering of legal advice.
He noted that the office of the DPP is working tirelessly in ensuring speedy dispensation of justice and that the ministry has been able to reduce the average time for delivery of advice from six weeks to eleven days.
He maintained that the interest of the state ministry of justice and NCS in terms of effective administration of criminal justice and decongesting of custodial centres across the state are in line.
He added that the state government places significant emphasis on reforming the administration of criminal justice law for of all.
He explained that the criminal justice law has several reformative measures to ensure efficient conduct of criminal justice system trials in the criminal justice sector and that it is also aimed at moving the criminal justice system from an impunity one to a reformative one.
He said, ” we will certainly seek your active cooperation in ensuring that the new law is currently implemented, and we have introduced robust measures to track the performance of the law, primarily through the administration of criminals justice management committee which your organization is a key stakeholder”.
“ The state government is willing and ready to support where we can because it ultimately impacts on the security of the state”.
Earlier, while revealing the purpose of the visit, the new controller, Delta state command, Babafemi Jaiyeoba said, the visit was to formally familiarized himself with the ministry of justice and initiate already established relationship, and strengthen the bond.
While he commented the state Justice ministry for the speedy legal advice and quick dispensation of justice and facilitation of jail delivery.
He, however, appeal that the prerogative of mercy which has existed before should be looked into and given attention as it will help in speedy delivery of justice and decongesting of prison, saying that the custodial centre are currently overpopulated.
He lamented that the NCS is battling with issues of logistics, appealing for the state government for intervention.
