    Fawaz Adebisi

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Saka Matemilola, has declared the commencement of the annual “Odun Omo Olowu” festival, a week-long celebration of the culture and heritage of the Owu people.

The monarch revealed that the festival, which runs from October 23rd to October 28th, 2023, would feature various events and activities aimed at promoting unity, pride, and development in the kingdom.

One of the highlights of the festival is the collaboration between the Olowu and the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Security & Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address the menace of substance abuse, cultism, and hooliganism in secondary schools across the kingdom.

The Olowu said that he had created an advocacy group to combat this challenge, in partnership with the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, and Positive Youths & Family Life Mission Centre, Abeokuta.

He said that the NDLEA would deliver a lecture to the youth on the ills and dangers of substance abuse as part of the festival programme.

The Olowu also said that he would visit Owu townships within Abeokuta and the districts to bring the festivities to the grassroots and foster good relations with neighboring communities.

In the same vein, he revealed that he would confer traditional and honorary chieftaincy titles on deserving individuals who had contributed to the growth and progress of Owu kingdom.

He added that he would hold various arts & crafts exhibitions, including cultural and fashion shows, to showcase the talents and skills of Owu sons and daughters.

The grand finale of the festival would be on Saturday, October 28th, when all Owu sons and daughters worldwide would gather at the palace to celebrate and display their diverse cultures and traditions.

The therefore Olowu thanked all his subjects and guests for their attendance and support, and invited them to join him in celebrating Odun Omo Olowu.
