The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised strong objections to the programme of events for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, describing it as an attempt to deprive Muslims of their right to Friday worship.
The coronation ceremony, slated for Friday, September 26, 2025, has been faulted by the Islamic rights group over the scheduling of activities that clash with the weekly Jumu’ah prayers.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, MURIC said it found the omission of Friday prayer in the coronation timetable “repulsive, provocative, insensitive and unacceptable.”
“Although the programmes lined up for the first four days are in order, we find the total alienation of the Friday Jumu’ah prayer from the Friday programme repulsive. This programme strangulates the Muslim Friday prayer,” Akintola said.
He urged the Olubadan Coronation Committee to urgently review its plans in order to respect the religious sensitivities of Muslims in Oyo State and across the country.
The Islamic rights advocate also noted that the historic event would attract Muslim leaders from within and outside Nigeria, warning that leaving Friday prayer unacknowledged could send the wrong signal.
“Guests from far and near, including Muslim leaders, are being expected at this monumental occasion. They should not go away with the impression that Friday prayer is not recognized by the Oyo State government,” Akintola added.
MURIC called on the planning committee to make adjustments that would allow Muslims to observe their prayers without hindrance, stressing that any programme of such magnitude should accommodate the cultural and religious diversity of Ibadanland.
