The demise of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, has sent waves of mourning across the ancient city, as preparations are underway for his final rites today, Friday, March 15, 2024.
The iconic monarch, who ascended the throne two years ago, passed away at the age of 81 on Thursday evening at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, after a brief illness.
The announcement of the burial arrangements was made by the late monarch’s younger brother and Baba-Kekere Olubadan, Kola Balogun.
In a statement released to the press by the deceased’s Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola, it was confirmed that Oba Balogun would be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Aliiwo, Ibadan, at 4 pm today, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The news of Oba Balogun’s passing has left the city in a state of mourning, with tributes pouring in from all quarters. Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, described the late monarch as a towering figure who made indelible marks on the sands of history.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Governor Makinde extended his condolences to the family of the late Olubadan and the entire Ibadan community.
“With total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing unto glory of our father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland,” Governor Makinde expressed.
“In Kabiyesi, Ibadanland had a cosmopolitan and well-experienced Olubadan, who made indelible marks on the sands of history and achieved greatly within a short while.”
Oba Balogun’s legacy extends beyond his reign as the Olubadan, as he was a renowned academic, former university lecturer, and distinguished public servant.
His contributions to education and community development endeared him to the hearts of many, leaving an indelible mark on the socio-economic landscape of Ibadanland.
In his last official engagement, Oba Balogun presided over the Olubadan Advisory Council meeting, where critical decisions were made regarding the reconstitution of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Despite his failing health, the late monarch remained committed to serving his community until his last breath.
As the city of Ibadan mourns the loss of one of its most revered leaders, prayers are offered for the repose of Oba Lekan Balogun’s soul and for comfort to his grieving family.
The funeral ceremony today will be a solemn occasion, as the city bids farewell to a monarch whose reign will be remembered as a golden chapter in the history of Ibadanland.
