The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged market women in Ebonyi State to refrain from hiking food prices as the festive season approaches.
Tinubu made the plea on Saturday while addressing women during the 2024 Women’s Day Celebration held at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
According to a statement by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, Tinubu acknowledged the support women in the state have received under Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration, particularly in appointments and empowerment initiatives.
“With the Yuletide season fast approaching, the First Lady appealed to market women to refrain from unfair hikes in prices of food items during the festive season,” Kukoyi said.
While in Ebonyi, the First Lady also inaugurated a 3.1-kilometer runway at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Onueke.
She described the facility as a significant development that would boost the state’s socio-economic activities.
“Commercial activities at this airport will usher in more socio-economic development for the state,” Tinubu said.
Tinubu later met with traditional rulers at the Presidential Lodge in Abakaliki, where she extolled the peaceful nature of the state and its potential as a beacon of hope for Nigeria.
“Nigeria has everything it takes for us to be a great nation. We have to continue to bless this land, and I appeal to you, our traditional rulers, to lead in that regard,” she stated.
Tinubu praised Governor Nwifuru for surpassing the 35 percent benchmark for women’s inclusion in leadership, noting that Ebonyi’s Deputy Governor and Secretary to the State Government are women.
She announced new empowerment initiatives, including a N50 million donation and the distribution of 20,000 wrappers, shoes, and bags to support women entrepreneurs in the state.
“The governor has decided to empower 130 people with one million Naira each as business recapitalization grants,” Tinubu said. “As Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), we did not come empty-handed. We are here to support businesses and women in this state.”
The First Lady’s visit was part of her efforts to promote economic empowerment and foster peace across the country.
