Muslim leaders in Ondo State have expressed their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as the marginalization of Islamic faithful in recent government appointments.
They staged a protest during a meeting with the state governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday.
Led by Chief Imam, Sheik (Dr.) Ahmed Olagoke Aladesawe, chairman of the League of Imams and Alfas in the state, the leaders informed the governor that the appointments made by his administration had fallen short of the expectations of the people.
Aladesawe highlighted the historical marginalization of Muslims in previous administrations and expressed concerns about their absence in key government roles under the current administration.
He questioned the lack of Muslim representation among the ten principal officers and criticized the absence of Muslims in the recent cardinal appointments.
The Chief Imam urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to rectify the perceived imbalance, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the religious diversity of Ondo State.
He expressed the distress of the Muslim community and the dissatisfaction of the youth, urging the governor to consider their plea.
In response, Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that appointments were made based on political considerations rather than religious affiliations.
He emphasized the unity of the people, irrespective of faith, and assured Muslim leaders that future appointments would consider the diverse interests of the state’s population.
Addressing concerns about education and religious freedom, the governor affirmed support for both private and Islamic schools.
He highlighted the government’s efforts in supporting Islamic education initiatives and reassured the Muslim community of ongoing measures to address teacher shortages and recruit Islamic teachers.
Governor Aiyedatiwa clarified the status of the Muslim Welfare Board, confirming that there were no plans for its dissolution.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to effective governance through the constitution of new boards.
