A shocking case unfolded in Ondo State as a clergyman, Pastor Paul Oyewole, found himself arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court, facing charges of allegedly threatening to kill Magistrate Mrs. Mosunmola Ikujuni.
The pastor is also accused of financial misconduct.
Pastor Oyewole stands accused of threatening the Magistrate’s life if she refused to heed his warning.
These chilling threats stem from a larger case, where Oyewole allegedly obtained the sum of N3 million from a complainant, promising to return it within seven days but failing to do so.
In a bizarre twist, the clergyman purportedly resorted to faking his own death to evade paying back the N3 million he had borrowed from a member of his church, thereby defaulting on his debt.
Additionally, Oyewole is alleged to have corruptly promised to offer money or a recharge card to the Magistrate in exchange for a favorable outcome in his ongoing case.
The accused is further charged with conduct likely to cause a breach of peace for attempting to obtain the phone number of the Magistrate to further threaten her.
Police Prosecutor Bernard Olagbayi disclosed that these offenses took place on July 21, 2023, in Oka, Ondo town.
The charges against Pastor Oyewole include, “That you, Paul Oyewole, on July 21, 2023, at Oka, Ondo, in the Ondo Magisterial District, did write a threat letter to kill his worship, Magistrate Mosunmola Ikujuni if she refuses to listen to your warning, and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 323 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.
“That you, Paul Oyewole, on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, corruptly promised to give Magistrate Mosunmola Ikujuni money or a recharge card to favor you in a case with charge number MOD/21c/2023, Commissioner of Police vs.
Paul Oyewole, in which you are a defendant, and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under Section 98a(b) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.”
In response to the charges, Oyewole pleaded not guilty.
Presiding Magistrate Mrs. Charity Adeyanju granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties required to provide the same amount.
The case is scheduled for hearing on November 16, 2023, as this intriguing legal saga continues to unfold in Ondo State.
