The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo State, Oluwatoyin Babalola, has firmly denied allegations of political bias ahead of the upcoming governorship election.
This follows a protest by a group of youths who stormed the Akure office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding her removal over claims of fraternising with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The protest, which took place in the state capital, saw the youths wielding placards accusing Babalola of secretly aligning with the ruling party.
The demonstrators expressed concerns that her purported connections with APC members could compromise the integrity of the November 16 gubernatorial election.
However, in a response, Babalola dismissed the accusations, asserting that she has no political affiliations and has maintained a neutral stance since assuming office as REC.
“It is not true, I didn’t hold any clandestine meeting with the governor (Aiyedatiwa) or any member of any political party,” Babalola stated.
She further clarified that her dealings with political parties have been transparent, in line with INEC’s regulations, and that she remains committed to delivering a free, fair, and credible election.
“In INEC, we relate with all political parties, and I have also been operating open door policies to all. I don’t have any preferred candidate for the election as they claimed. I am not a member of any political party.
“So, in this election, INEC will ensure every vote counts, and I promise there won’t be any room for bias,” Babalola said.
Despite the growing tension and accusations, the REC reiterated her commitment to upholding the credibility of the electoral process, assuring citizens that every vote will be respected.
