Tragedy struck in Abuja on Sunday when the foundation of a building under excavation at the Radio House complex in Area 8, Garki, caved in, killing a 25-year-old man.
The Federal Fire Service (FFS), in a statement on Monday, confirmed the incident, saying its rescue team from the National Headquarters promptly responded to a distress call and recovered the victim’s body from the rubble before handing it over to his family.
National Public Relations Officer of the FFS, Deputy Controller of Fire, PO Abraham, expressed the Service’s condolences to the bereaved family and warned developers against cutting corners in construction projects.
“The Federal Fire Service commiserates with the family of the deceased and urges construction companies to strictly adhere to safety standards to prevent further loss of lives,” the statement read in part.
The collapse adds to a string of similar tragedies that have raised serious concerns about construction practices and regulatory enforcement in the Federal Capital Territory.
In July 2025, two workers were killed and several others injured after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Gwarinpa.
In May, another partially completed structure in Jabi caved in during heavy rainfall, trapping workers on site. Earlier in March, three persons died in a building collapse at Kubwa.
Experts and civil society organisations have repeatedly warned that substandard materials, weak supervision, and disregard for approved building plans are fuelling the rising cases of collapses in the nation’s capital.
Residents are now urging the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and other regulatory agencies to intensify monitoring of construction projects and sanction erring developers to stem the deadly trend.
