The Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye has received a generous N500 million endowment to establish a Professorial Chair in Ophthalmology aimed at bolstering its academic prowess and research capabilities.
The announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, during the 34th Convocation Ceremonies held on Thursday at the Main Campus, Ago-Iwoye.
The VC said the endowment was made by Dr. Adekunle Olubola Hassan, a renowned consultant ophthalmic surgeon and Chief Medical Director of Eye Foundation Hospital Group.
A statement Deputy Registrar , Corporate Affairs Division, Niyi Oduwole said Hassan, would be conferred with an honorary degree by the university during the convocation’s grand finale.
Hassan was also said to have also committed an additional N500 million towards establishing the Institute of Eye Health at OOU.
This contribution, according to Prof. Agboola, will play a pivotal role in advancing research and education in the field of eye care.
Expressing his gratitude, Prof. Agboola highlighted the crucial role of philanthropy in enhancing OOU’s mission.
“The generosity of individuals like Dr. Adekunle Olubola Hassan, as well as our alumni and other well-meaning donors, has been instrumental in expanding our infrastructure, enhancing research capabilities, and creating transformative educational opportunities,” he stated.
In addition to the endowment, Prof. Agboola unveiled plans for the construction of an Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Engineering Centre on OOU’s Main Campus.
This initiative, supported by Nord Automobiles Limited, aims to cultivate critical skills in engineering, business, and innovation among students, ultimately preparing them for successful careers post-graduation.
During the convocation ceremonies, a total of 6,209 graduands, comprising 5,793 regular students and 416 part-time students, were celebrated for their achievements across various faculties.
Prof. Agboola commended the graduands for their dedication and expressed optimism about their future contributions to society.
