Another chapter has been written in Nigerian political history with the demised of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State. This is because I can’t remember when last a sitting Governor died while still in office aside Shehu Kangiwa. However, at the Presidential level power was transferred to Goodluck Jonathan in like manner.
My condolence to the family of Governor Akeredolu and the people of Ondo State in general.
It is not extra ordinary that Governor Akeredolu died because the angel of death is not a respecter of anyone irrespective of your birth, sex, age, position or religion affluation.
I love to listen to the “song” of Ewi maestro Alhaji Olanrewaju Adepoju entitled “Igba kan ko lo’le Aye gbo”. In that song the summary in which he said no matter how powerful a person made be he will be a victim of angel of death one day.
The death that kill a madman in the street has struck and kill Governor Akeredolu and will also kill any President at the appointed time. A Yoruba adage translates that “a death that killed our mate is only sending a signal to us that our own turn will also come”.
However, does our political class think in the direction of death? Do they ever ruminate over the lesson taught by Late Gbenga Adeboye entitled “ma a gba lesson l’odo iku” meaning always take lesson from death.
A lot of condolence messages will be sent to the family of the departed Governor and the State from Presidency to Governors, from Senate to House of Representatives, from King’s to Ambassadors.
Will all those condolences shield Governor Akeredolu from God’s judgement? Don’t get me wrong here. I am not judging Governor Akeredolu but I mean all human being including myself will one day stand before our Creator and give account of our life before Him.
As it is contained in the Bible Hebrew 9 verse 27 which read thus: “It is appointed for man to die and after death judgement so also the Holy Qur’an refers to death and judgement as “The Reality” Al-Haqqa Qur’an 69.
During the burial of the Governor Akeredolu which will soon come up I am sure that all Governors, Senators, Members of House of Representative, Members of States Houses of Assembly in Nigeria will be present. What are the lessons they suppose to learn there? They will learn nothing. If they have learnt from the past Nigeria would have become a developed nation by now.
Nigeria political class needs to realise that power is transient. Governor Akeredolu came back from treatment abroad and the State House of Assembly initiated move to impeach the Deputy Governor. Why, it was rumoured that the Deputy Governor wanted the Governor to die. Even if the Governor and his allies had wish to hold on to power despite his sickness at the expense of the State but for selfish reasons the nature did not allowed and death eventually strucked and took away the soul of “Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu”. The Deputy Governor that would have been impeached will now become a substantive Governor. History once again repeated itself. Have we forgotten what happened before power was transferred to Goodluck Jonathan? The rest is history.
Our political class should remember that they came to this world empty handed and they will return to God empty handed. No wealth will follow you to the grave.
The two religion Islam and Christianity believes that there is judgment after death. If so why are our politicians acquiring more than what will suffice them and then thrown Nigerian into abject poverty. Nigeria has more than what any European nations can boast of but greed and madness has occupied their mindset. How can we describe a situation where a Governor who was struggling to win the second term seat in 2023 was already masterplanning against Senate seat in 2027 if not out of senses. That is politrickians for you. They never think death can overtake them.
Our health sectors suffers because our politicians don’t think of death. Nigerian died of ailments that suppose not to kill them because our Governors treats headache abroad. Pregnant women dies during childbirth because there are no equipments in our hospitals and our doctors are in another foreign country because they are not valued in their fatherland. Their wives and daughters delivers babies in Europeans hospitals managed my Nigerians in diaspora. Our education suffers. While our schools suffers at home their children schools abroad. Universities lecturers can afford to strike for eight or one year because their children are not affected. Ladoke Akintola University suffered from misgovernance of some Governors. Our road are death trap because they flies in air. Kidnappers, ritualist, bandits, Boko haram are on rampage because Governors and other politicians uses bullet proofs vehicles and guide themselves with policemen and military officers but not in armour vehicles. So they care less about the insecurity in the land. Twelve hours electricity for Nigerian is a mirage while they never experience darkness in their home little did they know that they will experience that darkness in their graves. They buried money in their homes to bribe electorates in the next election because they believe they will live forever. They created poverty in the land and then use the poverty to manipulate Nigerian at will.
They never thought that one day they will give account of their stewardship before Almighty God. They never learn any lesson from the passage of their colleague who once gives commands but has become powerless and is now before his Creator to give account of his stewardship before Him. They never think. They don’t mind to kill for them to continue to remain in power. They never think of death whenever one of them is lowered into the graves even in golden or diamon caskets.
Nigeria politicians should take lessons from the exit of their colleagues and should better the lives of Nigerian in the little period they hold sway in the corridors of power because one day you will all answer the compulsory calls from death.
