Today, February 3, 2026, marks a historic milestone for Ogun State as it celebrates 50 years since its creation. Over half a century of progress, resilience, and cultural richness, Ogun State has grown from humble beginnings to become a vibrant hub of education, industry, and heritage in Nigeria.
A Brief Historical Journey
Ogun State was carved out of the old Western Region on February 3, 1976, under the military administration of General Murtala Muhammed.
The vision was to create a state that could harness the potential of its people, rich natural resources, and strategic location.
Over the years, Ogun has nurtured notable leaders, scholars, and professionals who have contributed not only to the state’s growth but also to Nigeria’s overall development.
Achievements Through the Years
Ogun State is renowned for its educational institutions, including Olabisi Onabanjo University, Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Federal College of Education, Federal University of Agriculture, and Crescent University, which have produced generations of intellectuals and professionals.
Its industrial hubs, including Abeokuta’s granite industry and thriving agro-allied sectors, have strengthened the state’s economy, while cultural landmarks such as Olumo Rock continue to attract tourists and preserve history.
