Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stressed that politics should be a tool for delivering essential services to citizens rather than serving self-interest.
He made this assertion on Sunday while delivering a keynote address at the Rotary International District 9141 Conference held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The conference had the theme: “The Magic of Connection: The Imperative and Privilege of Service.”
Highlighting the core responsibilities of government, Osinbajo underscored the need for accessible healthcare, quality education, and a robust social security system, which he described as fundamental rights of every Nigerian.
“Leadership in politics and governance must be service-oriented. This is not just an imperative but a privilege,” he stated.
Osinbajo cited the example of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s implementation of free basic education in the old Western Region as a model of impactful leadership, noting that it was pursued despite significant financial constraints.
Recounting his experience in shaping the All Progressives Congress (APC) manifesto in 2014, the former vice president revealed that one of the major debates focused on instituting a strong social investment programme, which later birthed initiatives such as the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme and TraderMoni.
He also lamented the entrenched corruption plaguing Africa, stating that the continent is rich in talent but continues to suffer due to underutilization of its human capital.
Challenging members of the elite, Osinbajo urged introspection, questioning whether their successes were driven by a commitment to serving others.
He called for improved fiscal discipline and budget prioritization, adding that the real measure of national progress lies in how well a country treats its most vulnerable citizens.
“Politics must be about the people. When leadership becomes disconnected from service, we lose the soul of governance,” Osinbajo warned.
The former vice president’s remarks drew applause from the gathering, which included business leaders, public servants, and civil society actors.
