The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has announced that Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, former Vice President of Nigeria, will deliver the keynote address at the 23rd Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture.
Scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, 2025, the lecture will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Ijewere Hall, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Victoria Island, Lagos.

Oduguwa stated that this year’s lecture, themed “Greening Africa’s Economies: Can Climate Positive Growth Deliver Prosperity?”, will explore pathways to sustainable economic development in Africa amidst the escalating impacts of climate change.
The statement read that, with a focus on fostering green economies that balance environmental responsibility with economic prosperity, the event seeks to stimulate impactful dialogue among policymakers, conservation stakeholders, and other key players.
He added that the Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture, NCF’s flagship advocacy initiative, has consistently brought pressing environmental issues to the forefront over its two-decade history.
Renowned speakers have used the platform to propose actionable solutions to sustainability challenges, influencing public opinion and government policies both locally and globally.
Speaking on the importance of this year’s theme, the NCF stated, “The urgency of climate-positive growth cannot be overstated as Africa faces mounting challenges in livelihoods, ecosystems, and economic stability.
Prof. Osinbajo’s expertise in economic transformation and sustainable development will provide critical insights for navigating this crucial intersection.”
In addition to the lecture, the event will also feature the awarding of grants to two PhD students conducting research in environmental sciences at Nigerian universities.
Sponsored by Chevron Nigeria Limited, the grants support studies in nature conservation, biodiversity preservation, environmental management, and sustainable livelihoods.
Recipients are selected through a rigorous adjudication process involving academics and conservation experts.
The Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture continues to serve as a key advocacy tool for the NCF, shaping discourse on environmental sustainability and advancing its vision of promoting nature conservation.
Participants at this year’s event will include policymakers, traditional rulers, conservation experts, members of the diplomatic community, academics, and the press.
