Governor of Osun state, Senator Ademola Adeleke has urged the National Population Commission to ensure an error- free national headcount in the next census.
PLATFORM TIMES obtained a statement from the spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, on Thursday said Adeleke disclosed this while addressing officials of the NPC led by its National Commissioner, Senator Mudashiru Hussein.
The NPC officials were in Osun State to sensitize residents on the importance of participating in the upcoming census.
In response to the Governor’s call, Senator Hussein assured the Governor that the NPC would do everything possible to ensure a successful and accurate census exercise.
The NPC boss also made a surprising announcement that the census would hold in Sambisa forest.
He said, “We have been working with the military to secure the area, and we are confident that the census can be conducted safely in Sambisa forest.”
Governor Adeleke commended NPC leadership on its preparation for the 2023 National Census.
He further urged residents of Osun State to fully participate in the census, stating that “getting counted during the census is a national civic responsibility, just like general and state elections.”
He said all eyes would be on the Commission to deliver, urging the organisation to embrace technology application in the exercise.
He said, “despite elections, we are taking the census project seriously. All levels of government including town associations are preparing. The census is critical for national planning. Accurate census helps governments to meet the needs of the people in term infrastructures and services.
“The history of the National Census in Nigeria is controversial. We must get it right this time around,the Commission must ensure error free national head count. Accuracy is key to acceptability of the outcome of the census”.
“Accuracy can be enhanced when appropriate technologies are deployed in the head count project. For us in Osun State, we pledge our commitment to mobilise our people for the exercise. I use this opportunity to call on Osun residents to participate fully. Just like general and state elections, getting counted during the census is a national civic responsibility.”
