Osun LG Crisis: IGP Orders Deployment Of Tactical Squads

Daud Olatunji

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun State to restore security and bring order to the region following a violent crisis over local government administration.

The unrest, which erupted on Monday, resulted in the tragic deaths of at least eight people, including a reinstated local government chairman.

The violence has also led to the destruction of properties and disrupted peace across the state.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police condemned the violence in the strongest terms and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

The statement also emphasized the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law in the face of such disturbances.

The IGP issued a stern warning to individuals and groups inciting violence, making it clear that the police would not tolerate lawlessness, hooliganism, or any form of anarchy in Osun State.

He called on residents to remain calm as efforts to restore normalcy were underway.

The statement urged citizens, leaders, and stakeholders to avoid violence and focus on their legitimate activities.

“The Force will not relent in its efforts to ensure peace and stability in Osun State. We will identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved in the violence,” the IGP said.

Egbetokun also highlighted the importance of respecting judicial processes, particularly in the resolution of electoral disputes, and reminded political actors to abide by court rulings.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to monitoring the situation closely, with reinforced security measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all residents.
