Residents of Abeokuta have expressed outrage following the shooting of a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Gboyega Emmanuel Aderogba, by suspected cultists.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred on March 27 in the Onikolobo area of the state capital, throwing the community into panic and raising fresh concerns over cult-related violence.
The victim, an ND1 student, was said to be returning home from school with two classmates on a motorcycle when they were intercepted by armed men.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the assailants opened fire at close range, hitting Aderogba in the stomach, allegedly after mistaking him for another target.
He was reportedly left in a pool of blood before passersby and student union members intervened and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was allegedly denied treatment.
The injured student was later moved to the Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Speaking with PLATFORM TIMES, the victim’s mother, Mrs. Aderogba Kemisola, said her son was responding to treatment but demanded justice for the attack.
“I want justice for my son. Those responsible must be found and made to face the law,” she said.
Meanwhile, security agencies, in collaboration with the Peace Initiative Committee Ogun Central, have commenced an investigation into the incident.
The investigation led to the arrest of a suspect known as Fredrick, on April 1.
He is alleged to be the owner of the motorcycle reportedly used in carrying out the attack and is reportedly in the custody of the SWAT police unit.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to release an official statement on the development.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved security and decisive action against cultism in the state, particularly in student-populated areas.
