No fewer than 4,169 Nigerian teacher candidates failed the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) conducted by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), representing a failure rate of 32.38 per cent.
This was revealed in a statement on Wednesday by the Director of Certification and Licensing at the TRCN, Dr. Jacinta Ezeahurukwe.
According to the Council, a total of 13,782 candidates registered for the nationwide certification examination held between May 15 and 17.
However, only 12,874 candidates—accounting for 93.4 per cent—participated in the exercise, while 908 candidates (6.6 per cent) were absent.
Out of the candidates who sat the exam, 8,705 (67.62 per cent) passed, while 4,169 failed to meet the minimum qualifying standard.
Lagos State topped the performance chart with an 80 per cent pass rate, followed by Edo State (73.3 per cent), Niger State (69.2 per cent), and the Federal Capital Territory (68.3 per cent).
Ezeahurukwe attributed the high failure rate to the digital literacy gap among some candidates.
“Some of the challenges encountered during the exam were due to the low digital literacy of some teachers, which adversely affected their performance,” she stated.
In response, the Council, under the leadership of its new Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, has rolled out several initiatives to bridge the skills gap. These include online digital literacy training, updated curriculum guides, and access to previous examination questions.
Candidates have been advised to check their results via the TRCN portals—www.fron.gov.ng or www.trcnigeria.ng—or by visiting any TRCN State or Liaison Office.
Successful candidates are encouraged to commence the processing of their certificates and licences, while those who failed are advised to enhance their digital and pedagogical competencies ahead of the next examination scheduled for November 2025.
TRCN reiterated that the validity of the PQE result is one year from the date of publication and reaffirmed its commitment to improving teacher quality and professionalism across Nigeria.
