The Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government area of Ogun State, Hon. Olanrewaju Oyegbola-Sodipo, has commenced the construction of a 300-unit housing project in Obasa, Sabo area of the council in a bold move toward affordable housing delivery.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the initiative, part of the Abeokuta New Town Development Project, is aimed at bridging the housing deficit and providing decent accommodation for low- and middle-income earners.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Oyegbola-Sodipo said the project would open up the city center for infrastructure expansion and new investments.

He added that the estate, which will feature one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, is to be named “Prince Dapo Abiodun Low and Medium Cost Housing Estate” in honour of the Ogun State Governor’s housing reforms.

“We are following the visionary path laid by Governor Dapo Abiodun, who has delivered 2,500 housing units across the state. Our goal is to bring that same development closer to the grassroots,” he said.

PLATFORM TIMES further reports that the chairman, who assumed office on November 18, 2024, has also launched several people-oriented programmes, including a healthcare initiative for over 250 elderly residents and an agricultural empowerment scheme for youths.

A recently commissioned 60-stall shopping mall, named after the governor’s wife, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, also stands as a testament to the local government’s drive for grassroots development.

According to Oyegbola-Sodipo, the local government has restructured its internally generated revenue system, ensuring that previously lost revenues are now recovered and utilized for development.

The chairman reaffirmed his commitment to the “A New Day Beckons” agenda, assuring residents that Abeokuta North is on course for transformation through targeted investments and infrastructure projects.
