Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has taken action to address the concerns of labor unions in the state following the removal of fuel subsidy.
He inaugurated an 11-member committee, led by Prof Olanike Adeyemo, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), to review workers’ salaries and other labor-related demands.
The committee, named the “Adhoc Inter-ministerial Committee on the harmonization of the various demands by the Labour unions in Oyo State,” includes key figures such as the Head of Service, Commissioners, and labor union representatives.
The committee has been given a four-week mandate to submit its report and recommendations to the governor.
This move fulfills Governor Makinde’s promise to address labor concerns, made after labor leaders personally delivered their request letter to him.
Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Makinde expressed his gratitude to the workers for their cooperation and stressed the importance of finding homegrown solutions to labor demands in Oyo State.
He emphasized the need for transparency in the committee’s deliberations and urged the labor team to consider the state’s overall welfare.
Governor Makinde also highlighted the significance of state-level engagement in addressing issues like security and economic activities.
He called for understanding and collaboration between both sides to find solutions that benefit everyone.
In response, Comrade Kayode Martins, the Oyo State NLC Chairman, expressed optimism that the committee would work in the best interest of workers and citizens.
He stressed the urgency of addressing workers’ concerns, particularly in light of fuel subsidy removal, and expressed hope for positive outcomes from the committee’s efforts.
