Players and officials of El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club were left traumatised after a midnight ambush by armed robbers along the Jos-Bauchi road in Bauchi State.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the assailants injured over ten team members and carted away money, phones, and other valuables.

The attack occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday at Rijiyar Malam village as the team traveled from Jos to Maiduguri for a league match.

Suleiman Abdullahi, Personal Assistant to the club’s Technical Adviser, recounted the harrowing experience.

“We were ambushed by the robbers, who fired sporadically to stop our two buses and a saloon car,” Abdullahi said.

“They ordered everyone out, attacked us with machetes and sticks, and robbed us of our belongings. More than 10 players and officials sustained injuries.”

The victims were rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for treatment.

After receiving medical attention, the team reported the incident to the GRA Police Station in Bauchi before continuing their journey to Maiduguri.

Confirming the attack, Bauchi Police Command spokesman SP Ahmed Wakil revealed that the club’s Secretary, Dahiru Bala, officially reported the matter.

“Officers from our tactical command have been directed by the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Muhammad, to intensify efforts to arrest the perpetrators,” Wakil stated.

“Additionally, victims who lost phones can use the command’s ‘Rescue Me’ app to trace and recover their stolen devices.”

The incident has sparked widespread concern, particularly over the safety of sports teams and other travelers on Nigerian roads.

Authorities have pledged to bring the culprits to justice while enhancing security measures in the region.

El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club, a prominent team in Nigerian football, expressed gratitude that the injuries were not fatal and called on the government to ensure safer travel conditions for athletes and citizens alike.
