Panic As Church Collapses On Worshippers In Taraba

…several injured as windstorm wreaks havoc

A Sunday worship service turned tragic in Mutum-Biyu, Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, when a church building collapsed, leaving several worshippers injured.

The incident occurred at the United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN), located behind the Divisional Police Office in the town, following a heavy downpour accompanied by a violent windstorm.

Though no lives were lost in the incident, multiple worshippers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Witnesses said the sudden collapse of the building caused a stampede, with some worshippers trapped under debris before being rescued by residents.

Confirming the incident, a local bone setter, Alhaji Baffa Wanzami, told PLATFORM TIMES that three of the injured, including a young girl, were brought to him with fractures.

“It is very sad that some worshippers were injured while others suffered fractures when the church collapsed during service,” Wanzami said in a phone interview.

“Some of them, including a little girl with broken arms and legs, were brought to me for treatment and I’ve already set their bones.”

Other victims were reportedly taken to the Mutum-Biyu General Hospital for medical attention.

A resident, Musa Adamu, also disclosed that several houses in the area were destroyed as the storm swept through the town.

“It was a terrible experience. The wind was so strong, it tore off roofs and brought down structures,” he said.

The church collapse has raised concerns over the structural integrity of buildings in the area, especially during the rainy season.
