A 48-year-old cleric, David Olasupo, was on Tuesday, arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly posting pictures of a woman on Facebook and labeling her a ‘ritualist.’
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the police report indicates that the defendant, whose residential address remains undisclosed, is facing charges for conduct likely to breach public peace.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Ayodele Adeosun, the alleged offense took place on April 29, around 10:30 p.m., in the Ilogbo-Eremi area of Badagry, Lagos State.
The prosecutor detailed that Olasupo posted pictures of Mrs. Mayowa Abimbola, another cleric, on Facebook, accusing her of being involved in ritualistic activities.
This accusation, Inspector Adeosun argued, significantly disturbed public order. It was revealed that Olasupo and Abimbola had previously enjoyed a cordial relationship, often collaborating on religious activities until a recent fallout led to the defamatory post.
Olasupo pleaded not guilty to the charge, which, according to the prosecution, violates Section 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya, presiding over the case, granted Olasupo bail set at N200,000 with two sureties of the same amount.
The case is scheduled for mention on June 25.In a related incident, a separate arraignment revealed further allegations against Olasupo, involving assault, malicious damage, and threats to life.
This second arraignment took place before Chief Magistrate A. Layeni, with the prosecution led by Inspector Edet Ekpo.
The charges stem from an event on April 30 at approximately 4:30 p.m., where Olasupo allegedly assaulted his landlord, Mr. Emmanuel Marlley, by holding him in a chokehold and causing significant property damage valued at N450,000.
The damaged items reportedly included floor tiles, keys, a water closet cover, entrance flooring, sockets, electrical wires, and a change-over box.
Furthermore, Olasupo allegedly threatened to kill his landlord during the altercation.
These actions are said to contravene Sections 172, 350, and 232 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
For this case, Olasupo was also granted bail, this time set at N300,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be gainfully employed, while the other must be a civil servant.
This case is set for mention on June 6.
