A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Dimeji Fabiyi, has described the recent declaration of support for the embattled acting National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Umar Damagun, by five deputy members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) as inconsequential and lacking substance.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Fabiyi criticized the deputies for allegedly aligning themselves with what he termed as forces intent on the destruction of the PDP, accusing them of acting out of selfish interests.
“The press conference by the five deputy NWC members of the PDP who do not have votes in the NEC and are not sitting members of the NWC is unfortunate. It is unfortunate because they are allowing themselves to be used in the palpable death of the party,” Fabiyi said.
Fabiyi dismissed the deputies’ actions, stating that their declaration of support for Damagun is “not only inconsequential but also lacks common sense and holds no water.”
He argued that the deputies are either ignorant of their constitutional roles within the party or are deliberately exploiting their positions to pursue personal gains.
“Perhaps, they are delusional of their roles in the party’s constitution or ignorant of it. The truth, however, is that they are quite aware that their words have no bite, and their vituperations are inconsequential,” he said.
Fabiyi further accused the deputies of aligning with individuals he described as “enemies of the PDP,” including the acting chairman, Damagun, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Describing the deputies’ move as an “aberration,” Fabiyi said it insulted the sensibilities of loyal PDP members.
He likened their actions to those of opportunists seeking personal rewards.
“In politics, you find all kinds of characters who lack credibility and conscience; they don’t have the love of the party at heart. It’s all about personal selfish interests, as being exhibited by Minister Wike, Damagun, and the gang,” he stated.
He added that the deputies’ roles have historically been insignificant in the party’s decision-making processes, noting that they struggle to act unless their substantive NWC members are absent.
Fabiyi accused Damagun of being complicit in what he termed the decline of the PDP, alleging that his support base is shrinking.
He claimed that Damagun and his associates are using low-ranking party officials to pursue “inordinate aspirations.”
“It is obvious that water is gradually drying behind Amb. Damagun. Hence, the frustration and struggle to mobilize low-IQ officials of the party, however meaningless their support might be.
Damagun is oblivious of the fact that the death of the PDP will first consume him and his gang,” Fabiyi said.
He also took a swipe at Wike, alleging that the Minister had already secured his position with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), leaving the PDP in turmoil
Fabiyi urged loyal party members not to be troubled by the actions of the deputies, describing their declaration as a futile attempt to influence the party’s trajectory.
“The inconsequential declaration by the NWC deputies is not something to be worried about. It is a mere wishful thinking of a houseboy who thinks by satisfying his master once, he will be entitled to marry the beautiful daughter of his boss,” Fabiyi quipped.
