PDP Ward Chairman, Son Shot Dead in Kwara, Saraki Decries Rising Insecurity

A ward chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, Alhaji Kpotun, and his son, have been shot dead by gunmen in what residents fear may be a politically motivated attack.

The victims were killed in their residence at Lile Village, near Ndeji community, on Tuesday night. Sources told PLATFORM TIMES that the assailants stormed the house under the cover of darkness and opened fire, killing both father and son on the spot.

A former council chairman in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the tragic development. “The deceased and his son were shot dead during the invasion. The entire community is in shock,” he said.

While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, residents expressed growing concerns over a disturbing pattern of attacks in the area.

“This is the third similar killing in recent times where the assailants did not ask for a ransom. It raises questions about whether this is beyond ordinary criminal activity,” said a local leader, Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kwara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

Reacting to the tragedy, former Senate President and leader of the PDP in the state, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, condemned the killings, describing them as heartbreaking and unacceptable.

“This is a devastating loss. I am deeply saddened by the gruesome killing of Alhaji Kpotun and his son. My thoughts and prayers are with their family and the people of Patigi,” Saraki said in a statement released on Wednesday.

He called on the Kwara State Government and security agencies to urgently investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Our people deserve to live in peace. The protection of lives and property must be a top priority for all levels of government,” Saraki added.
