The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party worsened on Monday as former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, declared that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, risks expulsion from the party.
Fayose made the remark at the party’s 2026 National Convention, insisting that Makinde’s alleged anti-party activities would no longer be tolerated.
According to him, Makinde had already been suspended and would be expelled after the convention.
He said, “Governor Seyi Makinde is already in suspension and after this convention, he will be expelled. With the ongoing developments, he is also likely to lose the next election in Oyo State.”
Fayose accused Makinde of acting against the party’s interest by engaging in what he described as “contradictory actions,” alleging that the governor was negotiating internally while simultaneously pursuing legal action at the Supreme Court.
The former governor, who aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, described the convention as a turning point for the PDP after months of internal wrangling.
He added that the party would remain open to “sincere members” but would not condone acts capable of undermining its unity.
Fayose also reaffirmed his loyalty to Wike, whom he described as the party’s leader, commending his role in repositioning the opposition party.
The crisis within the PDP intensified following the recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission of a faction of the party’s National Working Committee backed by Wike.
The development further deepened divisions within the party, which has been split into rival camps.
One faction, led by Kabiru Turaki and loyal to Makinde, had approached the Supreme Court seeking to stop the Wike-backed group from holding the convention.
Despite the legal challenge, the convention went ahead on Sunday, producing a new set of national officers, a move that may further escalate the leadership tussle within the party.
