Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has expressed optimism about the potential return of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, to the party ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa, Damagum said the PDP remains open to reconciliation with past members, including Kwankwaso, who left the party in March 2022 to contest the 2023 presidential election under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Despite Kwankwaso’s recent criticism of the PDP as a “dead party” and his declaration of no political pact with Peter Obi of the Labour Party and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Damagum maintained that the PDP remains the most viable opposition platform capable of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“A person can express his opinion, but I want to remind him of the past when they left the PDP in 2015. If the PDP was not dead then, despite their departure, I see no reason to consider it dead now,” Damagum said.
He added “this party nurtured his political career and brought him to where he is today. We hope he will return to work with us to rebuild the party and confront this oppressive government.”
“Kwankwaso has had a history of fluctuating allegiance to the PDP, having joined and exited the party multiple times since 2015.
“In the 2023 elections, he ran as the NNPP’s presidential candidate, finishing fourth.”
Damagum emphasized the PDP’s willingness to welcome back disillusioned members and pointed to similar efforts to woo Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, who left the PDP in 2022.
Kwankwaso’s return to the PDP could significantly impact the opposition’s strategy for the 2027 elections as the party seeks to consolidate its position against the APC under President Bola Tinubu.
