The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has convened an emergency meeting at its headquarters in Abuja following a controversial move by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to revoke the land rights of the party’s national secretariat.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the FCT minister informed the PDP that the Right of Occupancy for the party’s national secretariat, located at Plot No. 243 within Central Area, Cadastral Zone A00, Abuja, had been revoked.
Wike’s decision cited the party’s failure to pay its annual ground rents for the last two decades, covering the period from January 2006 to January 2025.
This comes despite repeated warnings and notices by the FCT Administration urging all property allottees in the Federal Capital Territory to clear outstanding bills.
The statement highlighted that the revocation was made under the powers granted to Wike by the Land Use Act of 1978, adding that the party’s actions were in violation of the Act’s provisions, specifically Section 28, subsection 5(a) and (b).
The FCT Administration confirmed it had taken possession of the property, further escalating tensions between the former Rivers State Governor and the PDP leadership.
This move is the latest in a series of actions by Wike, who has been embroiled in a prolonged cold war with the PDP despite remaining a member of the party.
The minister, who played a key role in supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, has been accused of undermining his party’s activities.
Wike’s ongoing efforts to impeach his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, by lawmakers loyal to him, have further strained his relationship with the PDP.
The emergency meeting called by the NWC aims to address the latest development and explore possible courses of action in response to the revocation of the PDP’s land rights.
The party has yet to release an official statement on the outcome of the meeting.
