The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence in its ability to produce more state governors and reclaim leadership at the federal level in the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) made this declaration during a visit to the Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, at his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, on Sunday.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, PDP National Treasurer, Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, attributed the party’s optimism to growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians over worsening economic conditions under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
“The cry of hunger and poverty is too much in the land,” Yayare said. “Nothing stops the PDP from producing the president and vice president in 2027.
The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for the return of PDP. The APC cannot go out to campaign because they will be stoned. Nigeria is in your hands. We need your support to salvage Nigeria.”
Yayare emphasized the importance of unity among PDP governors, urging them to collaborate in actualizing the party’s vision for the country.
He further stated that the NWC was committed to rallying support across PDP-controlled states ahead of the 2027 elections.
The visit also served as an opportunity for the NWC to commiserate with Governor Diri over the recent deaths of retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Moses Jituboh, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.
PDP National Secretary, Ude Okoye, reaffirmed the NWC’s determination to reposition the party and present it as a credible alternative capable of delivering quality leadership.
“The NWC will swing into action to strengthen the party and ensure respect for its leadership and governors,” Okoye said.
He also commended Diri for his exemplary leadership and developmental strides in Bayelsa State, describing him as a model for other PDP governors.
In his response, Governor Diri stressed the need for party unity and internal discipline. He urged PDP members to prioritize the party’s survival over personal interests.
“We need to work closely together as governors and as a party. If PDP dies in our hands, posterity will not forgive us,” Diri said.
“We cannot be in PDP in the daytime and at night be in another party. We need to do in-house cleansing.”
Diri also supported the idea of forming a mega party with PDP at the forefront, capable of reclaiming power at the center.
“The current state of the country requires a strong, united opposition. Strengthening the PDP is the first step to salvaging Nigeria from its current slide,” he said.
