The Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi had pointed fingers at Nigerian political leaders and parents for actively imparting corrupt values to the younger generation.

Writing under his X handle on Sunday, Obi used the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day, observed globally on Saturday, to draw attention to the pervasive issue plaguing the nation.

Obi emphasized the dire consequences of corruption, labelling it as the paramount threat to Nigeria’s national existence, particularly affecting democracy, peace, and overall progress.

He expressed deep concern over the severe impact on the rule of law, citing the blatant disregard for the constitution as symptomatic of the endemic corruption deeply entrenched in society.

Even more alarming was Obi’s assertion that leaders, including himself, were failing to set positive examples for the youth, fostering a culture of corruption through their actions.

The former governor highlighted the recent statement by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, who raised the alarm about a significant percentage of Nigerian youths engaging in cybercrime.

Obi challenged society to reflect on the origins of such criminal behavior among the youth, pointing directly at parents and leaders as the likely culprits.

This call to introspection raises crucial questions about the ethical foundations being laid for the next generation and the role that those in positions of authority play in either perpetuating or combating corruption.
