Former Secretary to Anambra State Government (SSG), Oseloka Obaze, has disclosed that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, purchased 400 SUVs for traditional rulers during his tenure as the State Governor.
This revelation comes amid Obi’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s allocation of funds for lawmakers’ SUVs, claiming it as a misuse of public resources.
Obi, now in opposition, had condemned the expenditure of N60 billion on luxurious SUVs for federal lawmakers, arguing that such funds could have been utilized for primary healthcare, addressing the alarming infant mortality rate in Nigeria.
He emphasized the potential economic boost by supporting local manufacturers like Innoson Motors, PAN, or other auto assembly plants.
Contradicting his stance, Obaze’s posts on X detailed an incident where one of the traditional rulers crashed his SUV, leading to concerns of a public relations disaster.
Obaze’s intervention with Innoson Motors ensured repairs and a seamless replacement, highlighting a contrast between Obi’s public criticism and his actions as a governor.
This disclosure has sparked criticism on social media, with notable figures like Reno Omokri branding Obi a hypocrite for condemning the National Assembly’s SUV purchases while overseeing a similar expenditure for traditional rulers.
The controversy has raised questions about the judicious use of public funds and the consistency of politicians’ actions with their stated principles.
Critics on X, including @DanielRepha and @OgbeniDipo, pointed out the apparent hypocrisy, stating that Obi’s past actions contradict his public image as an advocate for cost reduction in governance. @A_Y_Rafindadi labeled Obi a hypocrite of the highest order, emphasizing the pervasive issue of political hypocrisy.
